sailors tattoo meaning

In doing genealogy research on someone, his prison records (pre 1940) note that he has a tattoo of "an anchor and squareknot". He supposedly was on a ship that went down in the Bering Strait (date unknown) and survived so obviously he was a sailor in some capacity. Does anyone know what the squareknot indicated? Other research onling says that a 'rope' indicated a deckhand but makes no mention of knots of any kind. Any help appreciated and please e-mail me directly...
